How to Measure Your Business’s Carbon Footprint

Carbon dioxide emissions are a prominent issue for businesses all over the world. Measuring your output, however, doesn’t have to be hard, and a number of SME’s, like professional tilers, are being encouraged to consider a carbon management strategy. If you’d like to work in a more sustainable way, calculating your footprint is the first step to reducing the impact of your business activity. Read on for why your footprint matters and how to analyse it for a more ecologically friendly organisation.

Your business’s carbon footprint explained

The amount of greenhouse gases produced by a company's operations is known as its carbon footprint. Identifying the key areas of your organisation where carbon emissions are prevalent is a logical first step toward becoming a more carbon-friendly company and decreasing your environmental impact. Based on factors like energy use and fuel consumption, a business’s carbon footprint can take many forms. According to the Carbon Trust, these include your organisation footprint, supply chain and product footprint too.

The benefits of measuring your carbon footprint

Calculating your carbon footprint can be a great first step in helping to reduce climate change. It will also identify excessive energy usage, help you cut costs and ultimately enhance the reputation of your business.

How to calculate it yourself

There are a couple of ways to calculate your footprint, and The Carbon Trust has a great online calculator for small and medium-sized businesses. Alternatively, if you’re based in the UK, you can follow this guide, which explains how to measure and report your greenhouse gas emissions.

5 ways FILA is reducing carbon emissions

1. Water recycling

At FILA, environmental respect has always been a big focus of ours, and each of our divisions plays a part in our eco-philosophy. Dictated by a regional plan for water harvesting, we follow strict protocols for the treatment of rainwater.

2. Photovoltaic technology

Thanks to our innovative photovoltaic system, installed in 2012 and electricity generated solely from sustainable sources, we have decreased our CO2 emissions by 33,958 kg/year. This is equal to driving around the world 181 times with a car of average consumption - evidence of FILA's green initiatives over the last few years that are both physical and measurable.

3. Highly biodegradable products

The cleaners in FILA’s GREEN LINE are characterised by a highly biodegradable formula. Ninety-nine per cent of the product becomes biodegradable in just 28 days and is in full compliance with 48:2004 regulations regarding biodegradability.

4. Nontoxic, green formulas

At FILA, we believe that environmentally-friendly goals should become concrete actions, which is why we have created our sustainable GREEN LINE. The products in this line are highly biodegradable and nontoxic; meaning they don’t contain solvents, formaldehyde, hypochlorites, or carcinogenic substances. At the heart of this range is also our concentrated cleaner, which is loved by professionals and homeowners alike. Why not try our best-selling CLEANER PRO for yourself on porcelain tiles, natural stone, concrete or wood?

5. Our concentrated cleaner also means less waste and packaging

In 2012, as a company, FILA produced 364.608 tonnes of waste. Fast forward to 2020, and it’s a completely different story, with just 312.51 tonnes in comparison. Highly concentrated products with higher coverage rates are what has lead to a reduction in waste and packaging. In fact, changing our spray bottle packaging alone has reduced our plastic usage by 7.5 million tons – that’s the equivalent of removing 285,000 plastic litre bottles from the earth!

Our concentrated cleaner CLEANER PRO along with DETERDEK PRO have also been identified by Amazon for their efficient packaging design. By simply removing water and air, these products don’t need as much packaging and are, therefore, more efficient to dispatch. As a result, these changes in weight and size have led to a significant reduction in our overall carbon emissions. They say every little adds up - find out more about Amazon’s Compact by Design range here.

Once you’re aware of your business’s carbon footprint, you’ll have peace of mind; you’re doing what you can for the planet. In addition, try the FILA GREEN LINE for guilt-free products that keep tiles and natural stone in perfect condition! Thank you for reading.
