Petruzzelli Theatre in Bari, inaugurated in 1903, is Italy’s fourth most important theatre and first in Europe for seating capacity. It can in fact seat some 3200 people.
In 1991, the theatre was completely destroyed by an arson attack. In 2002 rebuilding started, was immediately halted and only continued in 2006, when the theatre was expropriated.
For the consortium of companies that won the tender for the renovation work, it was not a simple job to remedy the damage caused by the fire and by the first attempts at rebuilding. Today the theatre has been completely renovated and it was re-inaugurated in 2009.
Companies involved in this project also included MD Abrasivi, owned by Fila master treatement specialist Diego Mizzi. He worked on: about 2,400 m² of newly laid encaustic cement tiles; renovation of 300 metres of flooring in marble terrazzo dating back to the first renovation project; around 100 metres of early twentieth-century encaustic cement tiles, the latter in the foyer, the only area that was partially untouched by the fire. A hugely prestigious job that was rewarded with third place in the “Trattati da Re" (Given the Royal Treatment) Fila National Competition 2008-2009 and which helped to restore to its maximum splendour one of Puglia’s most valuable treasures.
