What to do if...

We Are On The Green Road

FILA's commitment to environmental sustainability is embodied in actions inscribed in a long-term plan that sees the company, and the people who compose it, committed daily to achieving goals of great environmental and social value. We Are On The Green Road is the claim that has accompanied the company since 2021, preceded by Green Action, which represents actions that affect both the plant and the products made at FILA.

The Solutions

FILA has shaped its intention to being a greener company with various solutions regarding its products:

  • the ingredients used in cleaners are up to 98% biodegradable

  • the entire PRO line is composed of concentrated products for professionals

  • up to 83% of the entire production is water-based

  • 50% of products have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions

  • 100% of secondary packaging is recyclable (FSC Cardboard Packaging and FSC MIX)

  • by the end of 2025, all bottles will be made of 50% recycled plastic.

Plant Based Products

Special attention should be given to Plant Based products. Starting with the research and development phases of new formulations, FILA strives to integrate into its product formulas plant based raw materials derived from renewable sources, such as essential oils with functional properties (tea tree oil), plant oleins, and plant-derived polymer resins. This makes it possible to produce products that are increasingly safe for the operator and the ecosystem, and are therefore not classified as toxic, flammable or harmful to humans or the environment.

Concentrated Formulations and Packaging

We are working to bring all products in bottles made of 50% recycled plastic (our goal by the end of 2025). In addition, 100% of secondary packaging is recyclable (FSC and FSC MIX cardboard).

The 1-liter bottles have also received Amazon's "Compact by Design" certification: this certification identifies products that have a more efficient design leading, on a large scale, to a significant reduction in CO2 emissions.

Production Structure. Where do the solutions originate?

One hundred percent of electric power comes from renewable sources, of which nearly 50% is produced with the company's recently expanded photovoltaic system to improve green energy performance. A new, fully automated customized plant has been installed for the production of the highest-selling semi-finished product, DETERDEK PRO, reducing electricity use by almost 50 percent.

About 90,000 litres of water used for washing the production lines are recovered and used instead of virgin water. In addition, a UV lamp system reduces the bacterial load in the water in product formulas by up to 99%.

As of 2022, we are also committed to disposing of and reusing pallets. By doing so, we have managed to avoid nearly 14,000 kgs of greenhouse gas emissions in one year and conserve nearly 70,000 kgs of primary resources.

When commitment is rewarded

When actions add value to a company, the commitment is recognized, certified, and rewarded. Let's take a look at the milestones we’ve reached in recent years, which we call "green road milestones."

  • Since 2009 FILA has been a member of the GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL ITALIA, a nonprofit organization that supports the spread of the LEED certification, an international rating system for the development of environmentally sustainable buildings.
  • Since 2014, FILA has been UNI EN ISO 14001 certified, attesting to the company's environmental management systems.
  • Since 2021, FIILA has been a signatory of The Climate Pledge by which it commits to becoming net zero carbon by 2040, 10 years ahead of the Paris Agreement on climate change.
  • In 2021 and 2023, FILA was awarded the Ecovadis silver medal: the Universal Provider of Corporate Sustainability Assessment.
  • In 2021, 2022 and 2023, an additional award testified to the value and practicality of FILA's commitment to the environment. By winning the Sustainability Award, FILA is among the one hundred most sustainable companies in Italy, acquiring a special mention in Forbes magazine.
  • Some FILA products are also Indoor Air Comfort Gold certified by Eurofins, an important recognition that attests to low VOC emissions in construction products.

Other initiatives

Thanks to professional, low-impact business solutions, we at FILA are protagonists within Green Pea, the world's first Green Retail Park dedicated to the theme of environmental respect.

We are also at the forefront of making an active contribution and supporting the water equality project of WAMI, a B-corp that aims to make companies and people water equal, offsetting their water footprint for communities that do not have access to this resource. The partnership began in September 2022, at trade fairs in which FILA participated: for each visitor, 6 gallons of water were donated to the WAMI water project in Betoho, in southern Madagascar, a country where about 40 percent of the population does not have access to clean drinking water. The collaboration then continued in the company with an ongoing purchase of water to be offered to guests, thus helping to offset their water footprint.

The project contributes to achieving some key SDGs of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda: making clean water accessible to all brings better sanitation, and it is a step toward improving gender equality and quality education, enabling girls to go to school and professional training for women. Finally, it is critical to combating climate change because direct access to water reduces CO2 emissions.

We also participate in the DECADE project, funded by the European Commission within the Horizon 2020 program for research and innovation. The project aims to develop a new photoelectrocatalytic approach (PEC) for converting CO2 and waste alcohols into value-added products. The net impact is to create an energy-efficient system that can reduce the carbon footprint by using waste CO2 and introduce renewable energy into the production chain.

In addition to the attention aimed at the environment, at FILA we are also concerned about leaving a social footprint by proposing and promoting equal opportunities, ensuring safe working conditions and high labor standards, and proposing Fondazione Veronesi actions such as breast cancer screening activities for women who make up almost 50 percent of the company's population to date. This is the commitment FILA has made to the future!
